2 abstract = {As the video games industry grows and video games become more part of our lives, we are eager for better gaming experiences. One field in which games still have much to gain is in Non-Player Character behavior in socially demanding games, like Role-Playing Games. In Role-Playing Games players have to interact constantly with very simple Non-Player Characters, with no social behavior in most of the cases, which contrasts with the rich social experi- ence that was provided in its traditional pen-and-paper format. What we pro- pose in this paper is that if we create a richer social behavior in Non-Player Characters the players gaming experience can be improved. In order to attain this we propose a model that has at its core social relationships with/between Non-Player Characters. By doing an evaluation with players, we identified that 80\% of them preferred such system, affirming that it created a better gaming experience.},

52 abstract = {The article deals with the relation of immersion and the didactical potential of role- playing. It fathoms the extent to which role-playing games without a didactical goal still have didactical potential, as well as the extent to which this potential is being exploited. Along the lines of the concept of surplus reality, I specifically look into the subject of the role-playing games alternative reality and demonstrate that the didactical potential of methodically applied role-playing can only unfold by means of the generation of an isomorphous model of a real subject matter. It can then be shown that recreational live role-playing indeed has an enormous didactical potential, just like the methodically applied kind. This potential unfolds just like in methodically applied role-playing, as live role-playing generates an isomorphous model of our reality. On the basis of these explanations I conclude with the development of a process-oriented definition of immersion, which allows for an intermediary perspective on the phenomenon of immersion, instead of a purely subjective one.},

In each iteration we constructed and tested game play and features using principles and ideas drawn from game development theory and usability/Participatory Design such as user interviews and expert reviews. Between iterations we made use of LARP-theory and theories of virtual environments to further develop the concept. Considerations of embodiment, concurrency in actions and rich communication emerge as central factors for the successful transfer between the two parts of the hybrid. Usability methods proved effective during game development giving a better and faster understanding of the needs of the players.},

A thirty-minute professional and contemporary live musical play, Captain Clean, was performed at three Chicago high schools (grades 9-12). In general, students in these schools had been judged to be at risk for drug problems by school administrators and by the Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority. Students' responses to issues highlighted in the play were examined through ethnographic procedures used during role playing and discussion immediately following the performance. In addition, written comments were collected from the students two weeks after viewing. The amount of interaction and level of student response indicate that live theater is an effective means for stimulating both thought and discussion pertaining to the effects of drugs in the lives of adolescents. In addition, analysis of the students' responses reveals: (1) an unmet need for individual counseling; (2) a pervasive ignorance of the legal consequences of drug use; (3) the importance of family as a source of information and support; and (4) an expressed concern for their own futures as well as those of their peers.},

This paper presents the key traits of such systems and the potential impact of those traits on in-game information behaviour. Method. LARP elements reported in earlier research have been identified as documents and subject representations and then analysed from an information system perspective. Analysis. In order to access the information nature of this social activity and the temporary space in which it takes place, a combination of systems analysis and descriptive phenomenology was used to analyse the game elements. Results. LARP play and its temporary reality are shown to match the patterns of information systems and LARP play to be analysable as a type of information behaviour. Conclusions. It is possible to not only model LARPs as information systems, but also define their traits to a degree that permits reliable study of information behaviour in such temporary environments.},

One steps behind the lecture podium as the others take their spots in chairs set in a row. The woman behind the podium announces that this is The Oprah Show, and then proceeds to initiate a conversation with her scientist guests. The participants are self-possessed and serious, picking up on each others comments to describe their unique lives and perspectives. They are in agreement in their responses to the question of todays show, Who does science?, although their expertise ranges from primatology to cancer research, robotics, and environmental activism. Their unanimous conclusion: Anyone who has a question that she is passionate about can be a scientist.},

597 abstract = {Researchers have indicated that Internet addiction is a wide-spread problem, impacting the lives of an estimated 4-10\% of all Internet users. Researchers have also indicated that Internet addiction has a social component, with Internet addicts using the Internet to build and maintain new social relationships at a much higher rate than nonaddicts. This study explored Internet addiction in the context of Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPGs). Data were drawn from MMORPG players and from mental health counselors to determine incidence rates of Internet addiction among MMORPG players, social needs that were predictive of Internet addiction, rates of treatment seeking behaviors by MMORPG players for Internet addiction, and how Internet addiction is diagnosed and treated by mental health counselors. For this study, the MMORPG Player Survey and the Counselor Survey were used to collect data from MMORPG players and mental health counselors. The MMORPG Player Survey was administered to 513 MMORPG players. The Counselor Survey was administered to 80 mental health counselors. Results from the MMORPG Player Survey indicated that approximately 15\% (n = 78) of MMORPG players met criteria for Internet addiction, as defined by the Diagnostic Questionnaire (DQ). A stepwise regression analysis of loneliness, online confidence, online liberation, validation, and support found that loneliness and online confidence were both positively predictive of Internet addiction among participants. Of MMORPG players surveyed, less than 1\% (n = 3) indicated that they have sought professional help for Internet addiction. Mental health counselors reported that Internet addiction was most likely to be diagnosed as depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, or impulse control disorder. Furthermore, mental health counselors reported that they were most likely to treat Internet addiction using one of the following theoretical orientations: cognitive, reality, family systems, or solution focused. These findings highlight a subpopulation of the online community who are in need of mental health services and are not receiving them. Recommendations for future research include qualitative studies exploring the social aspects of MMORPG gaming among Internet addicts, as well as research exploring potential deterrents to mental health services among this population. 777 @article{Vuckovic2003,
778 abstract = {The author attempts to give a short introduction to the role-playing games (RPG) subculture, which she claims is a specific subculture, in many aspects different from what is usually dubbed subculture. First, she presents the sociological development of the concept subculture followed by an attempt to give a working definition of subculture. Then she gives a short description of the emergence of the RPG and the five types of the RPG: tabletop RPG, computer RPG, Multiple-User Dungeons/Dimensions (MUD), Live-Action Role-Playing (LARP) and Trading Card Games (TCG). In the second part of the paper she uses Phil Cohens classification of four subsystems of subculture lifestyles (dress, music, argot, ritual) and his concept of territoriality in order to examine subcultural characteristics of the RPG community. Finally, she discusses the subcultural actors.},
